SYNOPSIS Gastown Gamble is a new docu-series following Vancouver entrepreneurs Mark and Nicole Brand as they take on their riskiest challenge yet: resurrecting the historic Save-On-Meats building in Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. In bringing the 54-year-old diner and butcher shop back to life, they hope to also achieve the ultimate goal of revitalizing the Downtown Eastside, Canada's most challenged neighbourhood. These days, it's hard enough for a restaurant or any new business to succeed, even in ideal conditions. And the conditions that Save-On-Meats faces are certainly far from ideal. Situated in the heart of Canada's poorest urban postal code with a population affected by mental health illness and addiction, Save-On-Meats is hardly desirable. Mark and his wife Nico understand the restaurant business and are known for some of the top eateries in the city. But with Save-On-Meats, they're going deep into unchartered territory. Not only do they want to do justice to the landmark business, but they're also learning the ropes of running a butcher shop and opening a commissary, deli, incubator, laundry and apiary. That's a steep learning curve. For Mark and Nico to realize their dream of resurrecting all four floors of Save-On-Meats and improving the lives of those in the community, each element of the business needs to thrive; one floor at a time. Their plan is a unique combination of business and social values -- and one cannot succeed in this neighbourhood without the other. Six different businesses under one roof in the poorest urban neighbourhood in Canada may prove to be too altruistic for their own good and with Mark's reputation on the line as one of the top restaurateurs in Vancouver, the biggest question remains: can you ultimately do well by doing good?
